One sure way for me to go through the roof is household disorder, it distracts me. Our bedroom is also my work space. If the room’s a mess, so is my mind. I wanted everything to be as clear and clutter-free as possible but when I took a look at our storage area, it was already full.

Now I’m at loss on what to do with all these stuff hanging around the house. At the back of my mind, I know most of these are pretty much useless and garbage but I’m just too much of a hoarder to let anything go.

Coincidentally, I was reading a book by Gretchen Rubin called The Happiness Project and one of the projects she shared was tackling clutter.

At first I was like, “nah, I don’t wanna deal with that” and just move on to the next chapter. But I contemplated and decided that it was about time I deal with this.

Aaand it was damn helpful. In the book, Gretchen categorized the types of clutter and dealt with it one by one.

Here are the types of clutter according to the book, The Happiness Project:

1. Nostalgic Clutter

These are made up of clutter you clung to from your earlier life.

In my case, these were books and resources from when I worked as a teacher and notes back when I was studying for the board exam. I took out the big box from the storage and looked at it and immediately wanted to put it back and keep it. After a few minutes, I went back and took it out again. I already shifted to a different career so I thought it’s only right to say goodbye to this for good.

And out it went.

2. Conservation Clutter

These are made up of things that are useful, but useless to me.

I don’t fall short to keeping useful things, I have a lot of them. But how it is useful for me is the question I failed to answer.

So goodbye history books, loom bands and the rest of the list I’m just too shy to share.

3. Bargain Clutter

This clutter is probably the one that hurt me the most. It made me remember the time I bought stuff that are pretty much of no use but bought it because it was on sale.

I’m never gonna use these bags and clothes anyway because it just doesn’t fit my ‘style’. Might as well give it someone else.

4. Freebie Clutter

This type of clutter has the biggest portion on my storage area. These are clutter of gits, hand-me-downs, and giveaways that I didn’t use.

My lola is a seamstress and she likes to make clothes for me. But I don’t ever get to wear most of it because it either won’t fit me or I look like a whale in it. I just wear it whenever she’s at home to visit us because she insists it’s the latest trend claiming that Kim Chiu and Maja Salvador have worn this style and also because I just love my lola so much.

5. Crutch Clutter

The things that I used but I know I shouldn’t.

And just like Gretchen, my list boasts of super old undies that already have holes and frayed edges but still wear them. Oh and the clothes I know I look horrible but because they are comfy so I wear them.

Letting go of my favorite grey shirt was haaard.

6. Aspirational Clutter

These are things I bought and only aspired to use. Like the adult coloring book I never got the chance to finish or the countless notebooks that I never even opened, just bought them because they looked cute.

7. Outgrown Clutter

I still cling to my pre-pregnancy clothes and hope that one day it’ll magically fit me again.

But I know it won’t not if I start exercising and dieting but that’s a different story so let’s move on to the last one.

8. Buyer’s Remorse Clutter

These are the things I kept because I’d rather pile them on the storage box than admit that it was a bad purchase.

Like that black dress I bought that are just two small for me. Or this bag I purchased online that I immediately regretted the moment it arrived on my doorstep.

So there you go, I hope you find it as difficult as I did decluttering your house. Amazingly though, it made me feel a whole lot better, like a weight has been lifted. And of course, the house is a better place now.
